Freya Douglas-Morris's paintings are built up in many thin layers of oil paint on board. Her paintings in Sehnsucht are based on landscapes she has visited. Yet she is not interested in just replicating images taken directly from a site specific place, but more in creating the memory of how she experienced the landscapes and how she remembers them after returning home. These works focus on a sense of vast space, hidden and forgotten places and the decaying beauty of things slowly vanishing and dying, while others form and grow anew. The contrast between the strength and fragility that these spaces provide, and the idea that gradually over time, so much has come to pass echoes within these quiet landscapes.
Douglas-Morris completed her Fine Art BA at Brighton University in 2002. She had a solo show in 2009 at 16 Beauchamp Place, London and her work was recently selected for Salon 09.
