"This painting is based on a film-still found in YouTube starring Natalie Wood in the 1962 vaudeville musical Gypsy. Although lifted from its 'burlesque' narrative, Natalie's Exit, quickly departs from her previous celluloid existence. The painting's title for instance refers to Natalie Wood's somewhat mysterious death by drowning when apparently having had too much to drink she slipped off the yacht that she and her husband owned. The intention of the painting in a way, is to open up the possibility of such layering of stories - a premise whereby the interface of painting and photography may be considered, and a space where seemingly the imagined and factual conflate."
