Studio Secrets

Describe the things and images that you have around you in your studio and how they influence or inform your work.

Everything in the studio is potential material for the work as it all gets photographed and then is open to inclusion. Apart from an extensive image collection this includes all the normal detritus of the studio so that it's partly a record of the process of generation. I would not be influenced by an artist so much as, on liking them, make them explicitly present within the work itself.

Describe your working methods and processes.

Largely it's a matter of chaos limitation and making visual connections between things within arbitrarily surfacing groups of images.

Which single item in your studio is most important to your work?

My scissors.

Which artist/s most influence your work and which recent show has   been inspirational?

Last year I was thinking about Valie Export, Sturtevant, Francesca Woodman and Haim Steinbach. This year it's Antonin Artaud, Richard Prince, Christopher Wool and Carolee Schneeman. Recent shows that stick in the mind are Gilbert and George, Josef Kramhöller, Lillian Vaule and Maureen Gallace.

Is your studio a refuge or a place of torture?

Neither. It's a practical place to muck about in.
