The Look is a painting show that examines looking and being looked at.
Standing in opposition to John Berger’s 1970s term ‘the gaze’ which describes how women are presented to be viewed as passive objects in advertising and European art. Eschewing too ‘the male gaze’ used by film theorist Laura Mulvey’s as a critique of traditional representations of women in cinema. Our Look is altogether more ambiguous. It represents an active presentation and appraisal of appearance, a purposeful re-becoming strategized through taking control, accumulating knowledge, sourcing, scheming and daydreaming.
A fresh look at looking. |
