Stephen Harwood, Study from Gone to Earth - The Devil's Chair VII, 2012, graphite Pencil on Paper, 21 x 21cm
'The work is from a series based on certain scenes from the movie Gone to Earth, the 1950 Powell/Pressburger vision of Shropshire author Mary Webb's novel, and the inspiration for Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. The Devil's Chair is where (in the film) Jennifer Jones casts her Gypsy spell.
'It's strange for me seeing the film as the landscape is so familiar, and very odd to see it given the technicolour look... I love the idea of Hollywood descending on 1950's Shropshire, and there are some great anecdotes about the making of that film!'
