Sarah Doyle

Sarah Doyle's animation and accompanying watercolours, Falling in Love with Greta Garbo, reactivates the onscreen moment where John Gilbert first sets eyes on the iconic actress and captivated by her beauty instantly falls in love with her.

Doyle says; ‘John Gilbert was a massive silent movie star in the 1920s but Garbo's fame eventually eclipsed his. It was said that when the talkies started his voice wasn't as manly as the girls who swooned over him had expected, so he lost a lot of his popularity (although it is rumoured that the studio boss Louis B Mayer hated him). I love the scene where he and Garbo first set eyes on each other and my animation shows his reaction to seeing her beauty – it is in effect a looped reaction shot of a man falling in love.’
