Mary came dancing,
Oh, what a crime!
Mary was entrancing, -
A sin in the eyes of the Lord.
Margaret Tait, Mary, Queen of Scots
Kirsty Buchanan has what she describes as a ‘child like fascination for historical and mythical figures.’ These figures are kept alive by the telling and retelling of their stories and the mutation of details, often aided and abetted by popular culture.
Buchanan’s British Low Culture film is loosely based around a 1958 poem by Margaret Tait titled Mary, Queen of Scots, this is accompanied by a series of miniature decapitated heads.
