The tableau represents the moments before the birth of Venus. She rose out of the sea because Cronos' testicles were dropped into the sea by his son Zeus, they gave birth to her.

The moment of Venus's birth is captured by Botticelli in a painting so immediate that it is possible to enter the illusion.
